Orin Ulthaine sees his sister only as a means to free him from bondage from the powerful and mysterious criminal Lord Malak Mabon. Separated for nearly fifty years, he hardly remembers her. She's supposed to be a small child playing with scraps of wood in their father's shop, not the young woman standing before him. All Lark wishes for is for Orin to come home, in order to help free their father of the insidious grief which has taken hold of his mind- which she fears might take her as well.

Together Lark and Orin will hunt for the Carp’s Eye - a perfect pearl shrouded in legend stolen from the House of Mabon centuries past. Money is tight, cold weather saps their resolve, and goblins are not the only enemy. That it is a fool's errand is of little consequence.  Better to face death with weapons in hand then to die starving and enslaved!
